Billionaire Bruton Smith broke ground at a ceremony for the start of construction of his $60 million drag strip across from Lowe's Motor Speedway in Concord, North Carolina.
It's anticipated that the new dragway will become the premiere facility for NHRA events with the inaugural NHRA Carolina Nationals on September 11th through the 14th. The track will feature a 34,000-square-foot starting-line tower with 16 luxury suites and 4,000 square-feet of roof access for guests.
Plans detail two grandstand structures, one on each side of the quarter-mile drag strip, with a seating capacity of 30,000 and room for expansion to 60,000. The primary grandstand will feature premium flip-down seating as well as bench seats with backs. Tunnels will connect the grandstands underneath the strip. Luxury suites with hospitality accommodations will be located above the main grandstand.
You can see an artist's rendering of the facility here. It's generating a lot of excitement in the heart of NASCAR country!
